What to Expect During Contact Lens Fitting?

A contact lens exam is different from a regular eye exam. It involves specific measurements to ensure a proper fit, comfort, and clear vision.

Step 1: Complete Eye Evaluation

We begin with a thorough examination to check your overall eye health. This includes measuring your prescription, assessing the shape and curvature of your cornea, and screening for conditions such as dry eye or allergies that could affect lens comfort.

 Step 2: Individual Lens Recommendations

Based on your eye health and daily activities, our doctor will recommend the best type of contact lens for you. We will discuss soft lenses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, or specialty lenses based on your prescription and lifestyle.

Step 3: Trial Lens & Fitting Evaluation

We will place trial lenses on your eyes to observe their alignment, movement, and stability. We will also use this time to refine the prescription for the sharpest possible vision.

Step 4: Lens Instructions

Once the fit is complete, our staff will show you how to properly insert, remove, clean, and store your new lenses. Our goal is for every patient to leave our office feeling confident and knowledgeable.

Step 5: Follow-Up & Support

Your fitting includes follow-up appointments to monitor your comfort, vision, and eye health. We will make any adjustments to the fit or prescription as needed.

Types of Contact Lenses We Fit

Everyone has different pairs of eyes, having different vision requirements. Therefore, a comprehensive inventory of contact lens types is custom-fitted to meet the specific vision needs of every patient, ensuring a decent specification for each patient.

  • Soft Contact Lenses: The most popular option, these lenses are made from a flexible, water-absorbent material that conforms to the shape of the eye for excellent comfort. They are available in daily, bi-weekly, or monthly replacement schedules.
  • Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses: RGP lenses are an excellent option for those with high prescriptions or irregular corneal shapes. They offer clear vision and are highly durable.
  • Multifocal and Bifocal Lenses: For patients with presbyopia, multifocal lenses provide clear vision at all distances—near, intermediate, and far—often eliminating the need for reading glasses.
  • Ortho-K (Orthokeratology): Ortho-K involves wearing specialized RGP lenses overnight to gently reshape the cornea. This allows patients to see clearly during the day without any glasses or contact lenses. It is often used to control myopia (nearsightedness) in younger patients.

The Importance of Professional Fitting

Compared to ocular lenses, contact lenses are medical devices that rest directly on the sclera. An ill-fitting or improperly prescribed lens can annoy the patient, cause blurred vision, and endanger eye health. Columbus EyeCare Associates is first and foremost concerned about your safety and vision health, hence the conduct of a thorough work-up and proper fitting of the chosen contact lenses.

Professional fitting makes sure that:

  • There is adequate oxygen to the eye
  • Maximum comfort is offered throughout the day
  • Clear vision is provided
  • Lower risk of developing either infections or irritation
  • Longer life span for the lenses
